If you ask most Vietnamese nationalists, they will certainly say no because the Vietnamese government has been spreading propaganda that Chinese are enemies of Vietnamese. So they don’t want to be related to the Chinese at all even though this might not be true.

LOL. Do you know what is confidence level in genetic test? It doesn’t mean that if you have 1% Malay ancestry, you have Malay ancestors. Just take the ethnicity with the greatest percentage.

How did they get 54 ethnicities? By counting all the Central Highland tribes. Genetically, there are only two ‘races’ indigenous to Central Highlands. The Mon-Khmer and Malayo-Polynesians. But within those categories you find the Ede, Jarai, and Raglai peoples, all classed as Malayo-Polynesians, as are the Cham who controlled the Central Highlands over a thousand years ago, as Hindu temples from 700 AD on show. The remainder of highland tribes were classified as Mon-Khmer, distantly related to Cambodians and Burmese. The Mon-Khmer tribes were smaller than the Malayo-Polynesian groups, and spread more widely. All of them in the 1960s were assessed to add up to no more than a few million people at the most, and obviously dwarfed by the sheer numbers of Kinh people in the Red River and Mekong/Bassac regions.

And speaking of the Mekong/Bassac, it held a million or so ethnic Cambodians who were Vietnamese nationals. In places like Tra Vinh and Soc Trang you can find Vietnamese looking people who identify as Khmer Krom, and people who look Cambodian but identify as Kinh Vietnamese.

Vietnamese are originally traced back from Southern China, where the tribes live. One of the tribe, which increasingly contacted to Chinese, were the Nanyue (Southern Vietnamese). Also, in Northern part of Vietnam, there existed a group of people, called the Giao Chi people.

So while Vietnamese are not Chinese, they have, partially, Chinese ancestry. Closest to Vietnamese are Cantonese, who inhabit in Hong Kong and Guangdong; although Hakka and Hokkien trace of origins are recognized.

From what I have read, the Kinh ethnic in Vietnam was a creation of a mix of Southern Han, Au+Lac yue, Minyue from Fujian, and Dongyue from Zhejiang. The Kinh means people lived near the capital. From ancient maps, the Southern Han population was mostly concentrated in the capital (Ha Noi) or cities (Hai Phong, Ha Long) in ancient North Vietnam. The Yue also lived in the low land around the Red river delta. If we do a correlation or overlay the two populations together, it is logical that there should be a mixing just like what was happened in QuangXi and QuangDong. Later on, when the Ming dynasty lost to the Manchu, a lots of Southern Han immigrated to Southern Vietnam so there was a mixing there too. Hoi An city, which located in the middle country of Vietnam also has a large Chinese population. The area at the southern tip of Vietnam was once autonomously administrated by the immigrant Ming Chinese population. So Vietnamese do have Chinese blood from Northern through Southern low land Vietnam. But not all Vietnamese have Chinese blood if they live in the mountains, or in a local concentrated areas that have strong ethnic minorities like the Chams, Khmer, etc.
